Unlocking the Anti-Poverty Potential of the EITC

EITC Access was founded on a simple but powerful observation: the U.S. tax code contains one of the most effective anti-poverty tools ever created — the Earned Income Tax Credit — and yet only 1 in 5 eligible workers claim it. That leaves nearly $18 billion in cash transfers unclaimed every year.

In 2024, 24 million working Americans each received an average EITC payment of approximately $2,900. For someone earning $30,000 a year, that's a 10% income supplement — potentially life-changing. And yet, for too many families, it goes unclaimed or, when received, isn't leveraged to its full potential for lack of financial guidance.

"The Earned Income Tax Credit is the best way to put money in the pockets of people that don't fit well into the market system, but that are perfectly decent citizens, and that have made a good bit of the success that I've had with Berkshire possible."

— Warren Buffett

At EITC Access, we don't just file tax returns. We help clients understand their refunds, make smart decisions about savings and investment, and access every credit they're entitled to. We believe the EITC — paired with financial literacy — can finally bend the poverty curve down.

Our site is part of the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, staffed by certified volunteers in Queens, New York. Founded by William Pereira, EITC Access is a not-for-profit community service operating entirely at no cost to clients.
